This summer I have returned to an old hobby, reading just for pleasure not only education. I was finding that all I was reading was christian material - how to's and such and just wanted to read something that didn't require as much thought and life application. So, I just finished reading a Nicholas Sparks book title "Dear John". Although not my favorite of Sparks, this did have a great message of selflessness.
The main characters John and Savannah had a long distance relationship for a few years after meeting one summer and falling in love. Because of distance and changes in life paths, Savannah broke off the relationship leaving John broken hearted while serving in Iraq. When John's father died he returned home on leave. He sought to reconnect with Savannah only to find out she was married to a man named Tim who was in the hospital with cancer. The doctors had tried everything and the only option left was a trial procedure at a very expensive hospital. As hard as it was to face the fact that Savannah had moved on, John knew in his heart that she loved Tim and wanted to see him well again. When John's father died he left John a huge coin collection that was worth a lot of money. John sold the collection and sent an anonymous donation to Tim for his treatment. John later found out that the treatment was successful and the love of his life was now happy. With no money and no one to love him in return, John moved on knowing that "love meant that you care for another person's happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be."
I was inspired by this books example of a selfless act. Upon completeing the book, I asked myself if there is anything I can be doing to care for another person's happiness, no matter the cost.
